Ingredients & Substitutions

Southern Comfort: Southern Comfort is a whiskey-flavored liqueur that did not even contain whiskey for a while! Today, it is a blend of whiskey, fruits, and spices. The whiskey-based liqueur comes in its original 70-proof, Southern Comfort Black (80-proof), and Southern Comfort 100. If you are looking for a little bit lower alcohol content, try their Southern Comfort 42 proof. If you don’t have Southern Comfort, try the cocktail with Wild Turkey or Maker’s Mark.

Sloe Gin: Sloe gin gets its name from the kind of berries it is made from, the sloe berries. The berries are from the Blackthorn, growing on its spiny branches. Sloe gin is another liqueur but gin-flavored with sloe berries and sugar. If you can’t find sloe gin, you could substitute vodka.

Amaretto: Amaretto is an almond-flavored liqueur, made with almonds and the kernels in apricot pits.

Orange Juice: Freshly squeezed orange juice is always best, especially when you can cut up some orange slices for garnish. However, bottled juice would work fine, too.

Garnish: Add orange slices and maraschino cherries for garnish. These are optional, but add flavor and some more color to the drink.

Can I Make This Drink Without a Cocktail Shaker?

Sure! If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, use a to-go coffee mug with a solid lid. Fill the mug up with ice, just like in a shaker, add all the ingredients, cover the opening mouth part, and get shakin’! Open it up and pour it into the glass of ice.

Alabama Slammer Shots

If you want to make this cocktail into shots, or shooters, shake up the ingredients in the shaker. Then, strain the drink into shot glasses.

If you love cherry and almond, this drink is for you! I don't care for almond in my drink, so it's not my favorite.
